Taking Measurements

Use the Mark & Measure tool to take centimeter-accurate measurements in a NavVis IVION site.

To access the tool, select Mark & Measure in the main menu.

When working with NavVis IVION measurements, you have the following capabilities:

  • From the Mark & Measure menu on the right, select the type of measurement you want to take: Free, horizontal or vertical.
  • Take measurements in the 2D and 3D view. Measurements will be displayed in both views.
  • Adjust the size of the views.
  • Activate 2D layers in the 2D view.
  • Take measurements in panorama or point cloud mode in the 3D view.
  • Use the Visibility menu to display the magnifier, the auxiliary plane for area measurements, cursor coordinates and measurement names.
  • View a list of taken measurements that are saved automatically if you have the Save measurements role. Click on a measurement in the list of taken measurements to go to that measurement.
  • Hide, delete, share and display details about your measurements.
  • Hover over a measurement in the 2D or 3D view to remove, hide or color it
  • Drag and drop measurements to group them in folders.
  • Rename a measurement and add a description.

The Plane of Polygon and Rectangle Measurements#

Polygon and rectangle measurements happen on one plane. Depending on the measurement mode, the plane will be defined differently:

  • For free polygon measurements, you need three points to define a plane.
  • For horizontal polygon measurements, you need one point to define a plane.
  • For vertical polygon measurements, you need two points to define a plane.
  • For vertical and horizontal rectangle measurements you need two points to define a plane.

After defining the plane, the dotted blue line will show you the projection of the cursor on that plane. This projection will be used as a point in the measurement.

Taking a Free Measurement#

Follow these steps to take a free measurement:
Note: Cancel a measurement by pressing Esc.
  1. Click Mark & Measure in the main menu.
  2. From the Mark & Measure menu on the right, select Distance, Polygon, Orthogonal or Point as your measurement mode.
  3. Left-click in the 2D or 3D view to start the measurement.
A blue line follows your cursor from the start point and the distance displays.
  4. Left-click at the desired end point to complete a distance and orthogonal measurement. To complete a polygon measurement, bring the cursor back to the start point and left-click. To complete a point measurement, left-click once.
  5. Measurements will be saved automatically.
Note: To readjust a measurement after completing it, click on a measurement point and drag it to the location you want.

Taking a Horizontal or Vertical Measurement#

Follow these steps to take a horizontal or vertical measurement:
Note: Cancel a measurement by pressing Esc.
  1. Click Mark & Measure in the main menu.
  2. From the Mark & Measure menu, select either distance, polygon or rectangle as your measurement mode.
  3. Left-click in the 2D or 3D view to start the measurement.
A blue line follows your cursor from the start point. For a rectangle measurement, two parallel blue lines follow your cursor once you have selected the first two points for your measurement.
  4. To complete a distance measurement, left-click at the desired end point. To complete a polygon measurement, bring the cursor back to the start point and left-click. To complete a rectangle measurement, left-click once you have defined the right area.
  5. Measurements will be saved automatically.
Note: To readjust a measurement after completing it, click on a measurement point and drag it to the location you want.

Using the Measurements Magnifier#

Use the NavVis IVION Magnifier to enhance the accuracy of your measurements.

Follow these steps to use the Magnifier:
  1. Click Mark & Measure in the main menu.
  2. From the Mark & Measure menu on the right, select a measurement mode.
  3. Open the Visibility menu in the top right corner of the 3D view.
  4. Use the Magnifier toggle button to activate it.
Note: The Magnifier only works in the panorama view.
  5. In the panorama, left-click to place the start point of the measurement and left-click at the desired endpoint to complete the measurement.

Coloring Measurements#

Follow these steps to color a measurement:
  1. Click Mark & Measure in the main menu.
  2. Hover over a measurement and click the eye dropper icon.
  3. Choose a color from the options that appear and click on it.

Renaming Measurements or Folders and Adding Descriptions#

Follow these steps to rename a measurement or folder and add a description:
  1. Click Mark & Measure in the main menu.
  2. Go to the Mark & Measure menu on the right.
  3. Double-click the current name of the measurement or folder (it highlights blue) and enter a new name.
  4. To add a description to the measurement, click the down arrow to the right of the the measurement name and enter a description.
  5. Changes will be saved automatically.

Grouping Measurements#

Follow these steps to group measurements:
  1. Click Mark & Measure in the main menu.
  2. In the Mark & Measure menu, click the folder icon to create a new folder.
  3. Drag and drop measurements into the folder.

Sharing Measurements#

Follow these steps to share measurements with other users:
  1. Click Mark & Measure in the main menu.
  2. From the Mark & Measure menu, select the measurement(s) or the folder that you want to share by clicking the checkbox next to the measurement(s) or folder.
  3. Click the Share icon.
After clicking the Share icon, all selected measurements are listed in the Export Measurements dialog with the following information:
    • The measurement name
    • The measurement distance
    • The measurement location (as determined by the site model)
    • A link to the measurement, which you can copy by right clicking or selecting the quick copy button next to the measurement address.
    • A screenshot of the measurement
  4. Click Export as PDF.
